(Beijing Denies Manipulating Currency for Trade Benefits)
China's government says it does not manipulate the value of its currency to boost trade, and insists Beijing's currency policies are not to blame for the huge U.S. trade deficit with China.
Tuesday's comments from Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu followed Washington's recent decision to delay a report on Beijing's currency policies.
That report could have labeled Beijing a "currency manipulator" which would have strained relations between Washington and Beijing just as a series of high-level meetings are scheduled between the two nations on a variety of issues.
Some U.S. manufacturers and members of the U.S. Congress have long accused Beijing of working to keep the value of its currency artificially low, giving Chinese-made products an unfair price advantage on world markets.
