Hong Kong businessman Kenneth Huang wants to take control of the Liverpool Football Club by the end of this month, according to a person familiar with the matter.
'He is in discussions with the Royal Bank of Scotland, the club's major creditor, since it offers the best and most practical route to get a deal done quickly,' the person said.
Mr. Huang couldn't be reached comment.
Under his proposal, sports investor and deal maker Mr. Huang would buy Liverpool's debt of GBP 237 million ($372 million), which is owed by American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, the person said.
Royal Bank of Scotland PLC said it isn't talking to a bidder.
Liverpool Football Club declined to comment about Mr. Huang.
Liverpool Football Club, a member of the English Premier League, has been for sale since April.
Mr. Huang wants to complete a deal before the league's transfer window on player transactions closes Aug. 31 so he could participate in buying and selling rights to players, the person familiar with the matter said.
Mr. Huang is backed by a Far East sovereign-wealth fund, the person said. 'The sooner this deal happens, the better. We are proposing to buy the debt now but, ultimately, it is about buying the entire business,' he said.
If the sale is successful, Mr. Huang plans to invest a substantial amount on players squad and a new stadium, the person said.
Mr. Huang, the head of Hong Kong investment firm QSL Sports Ltd., last year led a group of Chinese investors to purchase a minority stake in the U.S. National Basketball Association's Cleveland Cavaliers and the team's arena.
The Guangzhou, China, native, who studied at Columbia University in New York, has helped arrange deals between Chinese investors and the NBA's Rockets and the New York Yankees baseball team.
