A worker fell to his death at a southern China factory owned by an affiliate of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (2317.TW), the electronics manufacturing giant hit by a spate of suicides earlier this year.
The deceased man, who died early Tuesday after falling from a dormitory building, was an employee of a human resources contractor working at a factory owned by Chimei Innolux Corp. (3481.TW ILUXL), a Hon Hai affiliate that makes flat-panel displays. Chimei said it was working with the contractor and police to investigate the incident, which occurred in the city of Foshan.
The employee suicides at Hon Hai, along with labor protests at other companies, have drawn increased international scrutiny of the working conditions at factories in China. In the first five months of this year, 10 employees at Hon Hai's massive Shenzhen operation jumped to their deaths in separate incidents, prompting the company to take a series of measures to improve conditions, including large-scale wage increases last month.
Hon Hai, which uses the trade name Foxconn, assembles a range of gadgets and personal computers for big brands, including Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPads, and Nokia Corp. (NOK NOK1V.HE) cellphones. Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou owns 2.9% in Chimei Innolux, and Hon Hai and several units or affiliates also own small stakes in the company.
Hon Hai's spokesman Edmund Ding said Tuesday he was unaware of the death at Chimei Innolux.
Chimei Innolux said the deceased worker was born in 1992 in the northern Chinese province of Hebei. It said the worker, who had studied at a technical school, had officially started work as a trainee on July 2, but two days later stopped reporting for work. It said his trainee position was canceled on July 7, and preparations were being made for his return home.
