World-wide hotel rates fell 14% last year as the recession dented the travel industry, said Hotels.com.
The company's Hotel Price Index, which tracks the real prices paid per room by Hotels.com customers around the world, revealed travellers spent 13% less on hotel rooms in Europe during 2009 than the previous year, 14% less in the U.S., 16% less in Asia and 21% less in Latin America.
The average price of a hotel room across the world was cheaper in 2009 that it was in 2004, when the index began. The sample comprises 94,000 properties in more than 16,000 locations.
However, towards the end of 2009, the rate at which the average price fell started to slow down. The average price of a hotel room fell by 7% year-on-year in the last quarter of 2009, compared with 16% in the first quarter, said Hotels.com, an Expedia Inc. brand.
'Despite some possible first signs of hotel prices recovering in Europe and the U.S. in the last quarter of 2009, the promotions and great value look set to continue for some time yet,' said David Roche, president of Hotels.com.
Hotels.com
A drop in the number of overseas tourists to the U.S. on top of a feeble economy has hurt prices in the country, it added.
