Iran yesterday blamed the US and Israel for the killing of a nuclear scientist who died when a remote-controlled bomb exploded outside his home in Tehran.
Massoud Ali Mohammadi, a professor of physics and nuclear energy at Tehran University, was the third Iranian nuclear scientist known to have died or disappeared since 2007. He was killed at 7.30am by a device hidden inside a motorcycle.
Ramin Mehmanparast, foreign ministry spokesman, said that “Zionist elements” and “US mercenaries” had used their “paid agents” to carry out the killing.
Mr Mehmanparast did not say whether Mr Mohammadi had had any official role in Iran's nuclear programme.
But he hinted at such a connection, saying defiantly that the murder of the scientist, who had won a national award for his work, would “speed up” rather than stop the nuclear programme's progress.
The White House dismissed Iran's accusations as “absurd”.
No suspects have been arrested and no specific group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The official media hailed Mr Mohammadi as a “martyr”, describing him as a “committed revolutionary professor” who had taught at Tehran University since 1995.
It appears Mr Mohammadi signed a petition before last year's presidential election endorsing Mir-Hossein Moussavi, the opposition candidate who ran against President Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad. There are suggestions the late professor had reformist sympathies and this, rather than any possible role in the nuclear programme, might explain his death.
