Tens of thousands of marchers flooded this city's streets Sunday for a rally in honor of eight Hong Kong residents killed last week during a hostage crisis in the Philippines, demonstrating the depth of feeling the incident has sparked in the special administrative region of China.

The event served as an avenue for residents to pressure both local and Philippine officials for further investigation in the incident, in which a former Philippine police officer held more than a dozen Hong Kong tourists hostage in Manila for hours before gunfire erupted. Chinese and Hong Kong officials have urged a full inquiry, and Philippine investigators have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation.

The thousands made their way through some of Hong Kong's busiest streets, many sporting signs blasting the Philippine government. 'Aquino III We Are Angry,' read one handwritten sign, in reference to the nation's president, Benigno Aquino III. One sign said, 'Gusto Namin Hustisya,' or 'We want justice' in Tagalog, the Philippine language.

One protester, King Yuen, said he came to 'give some support and to tell not just the local government but also the Filipino government how we feel about it.'

Local officials didn't release attendance figures as of late Sunday, but local party leaders and local media estimated turnout figures ranging from 50,000 to 80,000. The demonstration began in Hong Kong's Victoria Park, the frequent site of other political rallies, and continued to the city's Central district.

Many of the marchers came dressed in black or white, and many carried bouquets of white flowers, traditional symbols of death in China. Organizers handed out yellow ribbons for marchers to tie to their wrists or handbags.

Rita Chan, a Hong Kong resident and frequent traveler to the Philippines, said she canceled a trip there for November out of sorrow for the victims. 'I came today to give pressure to the Philippine and our Chinese government to [adopt] a strong stance on the Philippine government's [investigation],' she said, 'If they had handled it well and tried their best, we couldn't say anything. But it's different. I am angry. I feel sorrow. We just want answers.'

The incident touches on potential tensions in Hong Kong because residents of the city employ thousands of Philippine citizens as domestic workers. Also Sunday, thousands of Philippine domestic workers and others gathered in Hong Kong's Central district, where the march ended, to perform their own commemoration and call for a thorough investigation.

Rolando Mendoza, a former Filipino policeman, took a bus with 21 Hong Kong tourists hostage in Manila on Monday, along with a local driver and three guides. Eight of the tourists ended up dead following a gun battle with the police, with Philippine officials saying Mr. Mendoza shot the hostages. The hostage crisis was broadcast live on TV and lasted over 10 hours before police finally shot Mr. Mendoza.
